Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipes

Warmer weather is right around the corner. This means it’s time to break out the grill and get ready for barbecue season! What better way to impress your friends and family than by making your own barbecue sauce. Homemade BBQ sauce adds an extra kick of flavor to your favorite summer dishes. Whether you like sweet, spicy or tangy sauce, we have a recipe for you!

Sweet BBQ Sauce

Kansas City-style barbecue sauce is the sweet, sticky sauce we all know and love. These sweet sauces are integral in creating a thick crust on your barbecued meats because of the high sugar content. The caramelized sugar forms an irresistibly crispy bark that’s guaranteed to make your mouth water.

This brown sugar BBQ sauce by Baked by Rachel caught our attention. While it does have some spice to it, the brown sugar is the main flavor of this homemade BBQ sauce.

Spicy BBQ Sauce

If you want to kick things up a notch, try a spicy homemade BBQ sauce. You’ll notice that this recipe, compared to the sweeter sauce, has much less brown sugar and more mustard and spices. This sauce is close to a Kansas City sauce, but because of the addition of mustard, it could fall into the South Carolina category.

Tangy BBQ Sauce

The key ingredient in a tangy BBQ sauce is vinegar. Vinegar based BBQ sauces are known as “Lexington-style” and are often found in North Carolina. A little-known fact: vinegar was the original BBQ condiment and when tomato paste was added to thicken it up, the tangy sauce was born.

Compared to the above recipes, this tangy homemade BBQ sauce, from Cooking with Curls, has a higher vinegar-to-tomato base ratio.
