What is the Pantone Color of the Year and why does it matter? Pantone is a color company, full of color experts. They specialize in trend forecasting and produce products for anyone in a style-related, color-focused industry.
Every year, Pantone releases a color that they believe will be the hottest color of the upcoming year. As they put it, the color of the year is, “A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” Because they’re the experts on color, people tend to listen. The selected color of the year influences every part of the design world, from fashion to furniture, so we’re giving you a sneak peek at what they’re predicting for the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year.
The 2016 and 2017 Colors of the YeaR
To understand how influential the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year will be, let’s take a look back at the selected colors from the past two years.
2016 PANTONE Color(s) of the Year
Rose Quartz and Serenity. In 2016, Pantone did something they had never done before: selected two Colors of the Year. Not only were they declaring a color, but a pairing. This was interesting because it allowed for more exploration with the color of the year. You could use one color, you could use both or you could even blend them to find a purple middle-hue. Don’t think this color combo was influential? We saw a lot of rose gold in 2016. That isn’t a coincidence. Even take a peek at Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2016 Collection – it’s riddled with blues and reds, harkening back to this color combo.
2017 PANTONE Color of the Year
Greenery. This color is vibrant, bright and natural. It almost has a 70s vibe to it and that era was mirrored in fashion (think bell bottoms and fringe) to home décor (think midcentury modern). The Color of the Year doesn’t necessarily have to be used in order to be influential. Greenery has certain color pairings that led to the rebirth of all things hip and groovy.
The Spring 2018 Fashion Color Trend Report
Because the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year hasn’t been announced yet, we took a look at their Color Trend Report for Spring 2018 New York Fashion Show. These colors contain the top 12 colors for men’s and women’s fashions and is a broad example of what direction colors will be heading in next year.
With colors ranging from “Meadowlark” to “Lime Punch,” the Spring 2018 Trend Report makes us believe that a bright color will be the star of 2018. Something bold and vibrant will take center stage. The 2017 Color of the Year was a warm green, so a cooler hue could be the star next year. If you ask us, we’re leaning towards colors in the rich purple family, such as “Ultra Violet” or “Spring Crocus.” Stay tuned!
