Tips for Buying a New Mattress

Buying a new mattress can be a very overwhelming experience. Not only is this a big-ticket purchase, but it is also something you will use every single day. We’ve compiled a list of 6 key things to keep in mind to help make the entire process easier.

Is it time for a new mattress?

While mattresses are a long-term product, they don’t last forever – and they shouldn’t! Like any other product, mattresses go through the usual wear & tear of use. The only difference is that you use your mattress EVERY NIGHT! The average lifespan of a mattress is 8 years, however depending on the material that might vary slightly.

What size should I get?

The main thing to consider when choosing a size is your current lifestyle, and keep in mind you don’t automatically have to get the same size that you are replacing! Think about who will be sleeping in the bed. Does your German Shepard curl up at the foot of your bed each night? Moving out to your first apartment and the twin bed from your parents’ house is feeling a little cramped? Are your spouse’s long legs constantly kicking you in the night?

What type of mattress is best?

There are several types of mattresses, and each option has its own pros and cons.
Inner-Spring is the most common type and consists of spring coils.

Memory Foam are best known for providing pressure relief and support.

Hybrid Mattresses are the best of both and combines support with cushion.

Gel Mattresses provide comfort and an added cooling effect.

How do I choose a firmness

At Levin’s, we assign each mattress a score from our Comfort Scale to help you easily find the right level for you! There are a few factors that can help you narrow down your ideal score – but ultimately you will need to physically lay down on the mattress. Give yourself about 10 minutes for your body to relax, and really get a good sense of how this mattress feels. Some might feel a little awkward, but there really is no substitution for this step!

What is the return period?

The #1 issue people have is that they don’t think their mattress feels the same at home as it did in the store. A brand new mattress will take some time to break in after you first start sleeping on it, and that is why we have a Comfort Trial. This gives you enough time to properly determine if the mattress you chose is right for you, or if you really do need a different level of comfort. If after 30 days of sleeping on your mattress it still doesn’t feel right, you can come back in and re-select a different one!

Is an adjustable base right for me?

An adjustable base can be the final touch in achieving the ultimate sleeping experience, especially after you have found your perfect mattress! Nearly all mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases, so you won’t have to worry about being limited with your options. The ability to raise the head area can provide relief from nighttime snoring or heartburn; while slightly raising your feet can help take unwanted pressure off of your lower back. The possibilities are endless, and we with dozens of bases to choose from you’ll easily find the best one for your lifestyle!
