They’ll think you went above and beyond with this quick and easy DIY project. The best part is that there is no limit to what you can create: birthday gifts, graduation gifts, wedding gifts and more!

How to Make DIY Sharpie Mugs

Like we mentioned, making the mugs is very simple and you only need a few materials. For DIY Sharpie mugs, you’ll need:

  • Inexpensive mugs (color of your choosing)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Sharpie Paint Pens
  • Nail, needle, Q-tip or cotton ball for cleaning

To make the best DIY Sharpie mugs, it’s important to keep the mug clean throughout the entire process. The best way to do this is by wearing gloves when cleaning and designing to avoid excess oil getting on the mug. Check out the following instructions to get started:

  1. Wipe down the mug with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Draw the design on your mug. Sketch it out before if needed. Also, keep in mind that some colors will show up darker after baking. If you’d like, try baking a test mug with the colors you’d like to use to make sure the colors are to your liking.
  3. Clean up your design with a nail or needle by scratching away the excess markings. You can also use a Q-tip or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, just be cautious about erasing your design.
  4. Let your mug dry completely, up to 72 hours. This is extremely important before baking the mug because if the design is not completely dry, you will see smudges baked in. This will also ensure the Sharpie is properly sticking to the mug, which is critical for use and washing afterwards.
  5. To bake, place mug in a cold oven and turn it up to 425° Bake for 1 hour and then turn the oven off. Let the mug cool completely inside the oven. This particular process will avoid any cracking or smudging. The mugs stay very hot for a while after you turn the oven off, so we recommend doing this process later in the day so you can keep the mug in the oven overnight to cool.

Once the mugs are cooled completely, they are ready for some gift wrapping.
