Much like the rest of the country, we here at Levin Furniture have been watching as the effects of Hurricane Harvey continue to devastate southeastern Texas. Our hearts are broken at the sight of flooded homes, shuttered businesses and the countless amount of people displaced by this catastrophic storm. However in the midst of tragedy, the people of Texas have united together in support of one another in a way that has inspired the entire country. To quote the beloved television personality, Mr. Rogers, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping”. We did not have to look too far before we found a helper with a familiar face.
Meet Mattress Mack, A HurricanE Harvey Hero
When you ask an executive at Levin about Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, they’ll say two things. First, they’ll tell you how great of a guy he is. Second, they’ll mention how much he loves Texas. These qualities are demonstrated during this time of tragedy as McIngvale has opened up his Gallery Furniture store showrooms to act as shelters for people displaced by the hurricane. In a press release McIngvale stated, “Houstonians have a safe, dry place to take shelter at Gallery Furniture so if they can get here they are welcome. We hope to give them some comfort in this incredibly difficult time.”
And it appears he has done just that. Between two locations, Richmond and Houston, McIngvale has welcomed over 700 evacuees into his stores and he isn’t stopping there. Using delivery trucks, McIngvale’s team braved the elements and high waters to set out on rescue missions. Trucks that normally carry tables and chairs, carried about 200 people safely back to the stores. Photos McIngvale shared on social media show children playing on mattresses stacked side by side, families on sofas enjoying food and water, and even National Guard members taking a short break from their tireless rescue efforts.
How you can help Those Affected
Levin Furniture was inspired by the selfless actions of “Mattress Mack”, and countless others like him. Therefore, during the entire month of September, Levin’s will forward all monetary donations from Sally’s Café, and proceeds from gift items sold in stores, to assist in Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts. Our sales associates are even using the annual Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns football game to collect additional donations. With enough donations they get to dress down and wear their Steelers/Browns jerseys while working.
While the journey to recovery is just beginning for the residents of southeastern Texas, we hope they know Levin Furniture, and the rest of our nation, will be standing right there with them as they begin to rebuild.
